Hints for Zip #596
CheckCheck the path you have so far
Draw the line you have in the game, then press Check. We tell you how much of it is right and where it first goes wrong, without showing the rest. Still stuck? “Next move only” adds one correct step.
The checker needs JavaScript.
Hint 1Forced moves
Some cells have only two ways in or out, so the path has to use both. These 14 links are certain before you draw anything:
Hint 2The first stretch
Start on 1. From 1 to 2: down 1, left 1, up 1; from 2 to 3: up 1, right 1, up 2.
Hint 3Halfway
Here is the path from 1 up to 4, about half of the board. The rest has to sweep the cells that are still empty.

How to solve Zip #596, step by step
Our solver walks the answer from 1 and, at every turn, checks why the other ways fail. The darker line is the stretch each step adds; dashed circles mark where there was a real choice.
Show all 7 stretches (this gives the answer away)
From 1 to 2: down, left, up. The real choice is at row 4, column 5: going up or right looks open, but every way on from there gets stuck before the board is full (a dead end, a cut-off area or a number out of order), so the line goes down. 2 more choices like that follow in this stretch.
From 2 to 3: up, right, up 2. The real choice is at row 4, column 4: going left looks open, but every way on from there gets stuck before the board is full (a dead end, a cut-off area or a number out of order), so the line goes up. 2 more choices like that follow in this stretch.
From 3 to 4: right, down 5, left 3. There is only one way through: every other move is blocked by a wall, the edge or the line itself.
From 4 to 5: up 2, left, down 2. The real choice is at row 4, column 2: going left looks open, but every way on from there gets stuck before the board is full (a dead end, a cut-off area or a number out of order), so the line goes down.
From 5 to 6: left, up 3, right. Every move here is forced. At row 3, column 1, for example, going up fails: it would leave row 3, column 2 with only one way in, a dead end.
From 6 to 7: up, left, up, right 3. Every move here is forced. At row 2, column 2, for example, going up fails: it would leave row 2, column 1 with only one way in, a dead end.
From 7 to 8: down, left, down. There is only one way through: every other move is blocked by a wall, the edge or the line itself.
Inside Zip #596
What our solver found when it checked this puzzle.
- Only 2 of the 6 walls decide the answer. They are the wall between the 1 and the 2 and the wall between the 4 and the 5: take either away and the board has more than one solution. The other 4 could all go and the path would stay the only one. 2 of those sit between numbers that could never be joined anyway (7 and 3; 6 and 8).
- Spare numbers. You could remove the 4, 5, 6 or 7 (any one of them) and the path would still be the only one. The 2 and 3 are essential.
- Longest stretch. 3 → 4 takes 9 moves.
