Hint 1The smallest colour region

Start with the smallest region, the lime yellow one (dotted): it has only 3 cells, in rows 2–3 and columns 3–4. Its crown has the fewest places to go, and wherever it lands it crosses out its row, its column and the cells around it.

Hint 2Crowns in the three smallest regions

The crowns of the lime yellow, warm beige and lavender regions. Cross out their rows, columns and neighbours, and look for a region that is left with only one free cell.

Hint 3The top half

Every crown in the top 4 rows. Cross out their rows, columns and neighbours; 4 crowns to go.

How to solve Queens #920, step by step

Our solver's reasoning, in an order you can follow without guessing. In each picture the red crosses are the cells that step rules out by reasoning, the grey ones were out already or fall to a crown, the outline shows where it looked, and the ringed crown is the new one.

Show all 15 steps (this gives the answer away)
  1. Every free cell in column 1 belongs to the vibrant coral region, so that column’s crown is vibrant coral’s. It can’t have a crown anywhere else: cross out its 19 cells outside column 1.

  2. The free cells left in column 2 are all peach orange, so the peach orange region gets its crown in column 2. Its 3 cells elsewhere are out.

  3. Column 4 has 2 free cells left (rows 3 and 4). A crown on any of the 4 marked cells would cross out both, so none of those cells can hold a crown.

  4. A crown at row 2, column 5 would wipe out every cell the lime yellow region has left (row 2, column 3 and row 3, column 4), leaving it nowhere to go. So that cell can’t hold a crown.

  5. All of the light gray region’s free cells sit in row 1. The row’s one crown must go to light gray, so its 1 cell in other colours is out.

  6. The peach orange region has 3 free cells left (rows 4–6 of column 2). A crown at row 5, column 1 or 3 would cross out all of them, so neither can hold a crown.

  7. Every cell of column 3 except row 2 is crossed out, so column 3’s crown sits in row 2.

  8. Column 4 is down to one free cell, in row 4: its crown goes there.

  9. Everything else in the soft blue region is crossed out, which leaves row 3, column 6 for its crown.

  10. Every cell of column 5 except row 1 is crossed out, so column 5’s crown sits in row 1.

  11. All of the pastel green region’s free cells sit in row 5. The row’s one crown must go to pastel green, so its 1 cell in other colours is out.

  12. The peach orange region is down to a single free cell, row 6, column 2: that is where its crown goes.

  13. Everything else in the vibrant coral region is crossed out, which leaves row 8, column 1 for its crown.

  14. The warm beige region has just one cell left that isn’t crossed out (row 7, column 8). Put its crown there.

  15. Only one cell of the pastel green region can still hold a crown (row 5, column 7), so its crown goes there.
