Puzzle Answer Today

How to play Tango

Tango is LinkedIn's daily sun-and-moon puzzle. Fill the grid so every row and column is perfectly balanced, following the = and × signs between cells.

The rules

  1. Fill every empty cell with a sun or a moon.
  2. Each row and each column has the same number of suns and moons: three of each on LinkedIn's 6×6 grid.
  3. No more than two of the same symbol may sit next to each other in a row or column.
  4. = between two cells means they hold the same symbol; × means they hold opposite symbols.
  5. Every official puzzle has exactly one solution.

A new puzzle comes out every day at 12:00 AM Pacific Time.

A small example

This 4×4 board is ours, not LinkedIn's (two of each symbol per line):

  1. The = in row 2 copies the given moon to its right, and the × below it flips that, so row 3, column 4 is a sun.
  2. Row 4 already has two moons side by side, so both ends of row 4 are suns.
  3. Column 3 now has three symbols; its missing one must balance it, and the rest of the board follows the same way, one line at a time.

Strategy

1. Pairs push outward

Two of the same side by side means the cells on both ends must be the other symbol, or you would get three in a row.

2. Fill the sandwich

A gap between two of the same (sun, empty, sun) must be the opposite symbol.

3. Count every line

Once a row or column has its half of one symbol, every empty cell in it is the other one.

4. Read × pairs as one of each

Two cells joined by × always hold one sun and one moon, so they use up one of each from their line's count. That often settles the rest of the line.
